Rogue Squadron was initially scheduled to release in December 2023 and kick off a new era of Star Wars storytelling. That now isn’t the case as the script is being developed more and the entire project is further off.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy seems confident that Taika Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns film will arrive first. Kennedy believes Taika Waititi’s film fits within Lucasfilm’s roadmap for the future of their Star Wars theatrical films. Although I find it fascinating that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film that doesn’t even have a title or cast is supposedly going to come out first and ahead of Rogue Squadron? A film that at least already has a name.
Maybe we will find out more during Star Wars Celebration (May 26–29). The only things we know right now about Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film are that it has a Ben-Hur-inspired logo and that it is written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns who also wrote 1917.
I can’t wait to see Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film but I also don’t think it needs to rush. If it’s not the first one out that’s fine. If we have to wait until the middle of the 2020s to see a new Star Wars film so be it! Disney+ and that side of the universe can keep us busy.
