As first reported by Vanity Fair, Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts will helm and create a Star Wars Disney+ series which is being described as “a Star Wars version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.”
Despite the super cool premise, the series doesn’t even have a title yet. The code name for the series is Grammer Rodeo, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons which involves Bart and his schoolmates stealing a car and running away for a week.
The show takes place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, just like The Mandalorian. The plot remains a secret although with the knowledge that the series will be like “a Star Wars version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the 80s,” it’s not too hard to figure out where Watts’ series may end up going.
A casting notice has called for four children, around 11 to 12 years old. So, we could end up witnessing a very different series being told within the Star Wars universe. Hey, the last series I remember going with the Amblin style did super well. That series was called Stranger Things.
So, there is a good reason why Jon Watts departed Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four and that’s to create this epic 80s and Amblin-inspired Star Wars Disney+ series. I’m hoping we get a larger update soon.
The upcoming series is created and executive produced by Jon Watts and writer Chris Ford.
