The rumors are true.
Ryan Gosling is joining the Star Wars galaxy in a new film directed by Shawn Levy, who recently directed and produced Marvel Studios’ blockbuster hit Deadpool and Wolverine. Levy officially confirmed his Star Wars project on stage at Star Wars Celebration Japan alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni.
Levy’s film starring Gosling will be titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and it will be set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Gosling will play a brand-new character, and it will be a standalone story. It will be fascinating to see how Levy explores the post-Skywalker era of the galaxy. Are we going to be dealing with First Order fallout? Did the Resistance rebuild the Galactic government? Will none of that matter? The latter seems the most likely of the scenarios listed.
The name Star Wars: Starfighter could mean many things. Could this be a new Jedi story? Could this be a smuggler in the underworld story? It seems like the possibilities are endless.
“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” said Gosling from the Star Wars Celebration Japan stage. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
“This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” said Levy. He added that production starts this fall.
Star Wars: Starfighter is just one of several theatrical projects still in development from Lucasfilm, including films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg.
Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters on Memorial Day 2027.
