Everything Is Not What It Seems: Breaking Down The First ‘WandaVision’ Trailer

Disney and Marvel Studios released the first trailer for WandaVision during the Emmys and we can’t stop thinking about it.

SPOILER WARNING: This article will contain spoilers to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. This article may also contain potential spoilers to WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Finally, we have some new Marvel Studios content to analyze! After a long drought, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we finally got a new trailer from Marvel Studios for Disney+’s WandaVision. The series looks like it will premiere in December. WandaVision will now be the first Marvel Studios Disney+ series. Now let’s get into this trailer that promises a bold take and multiverse ramifications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Classic Television Look

The trailer starts with the usual Marvel Studios logo but in a classic television look. I remember seeing this appear on my TV during the Emmys broadcast and I knew instantly we were in for a real treat. The trailer also features the 50s song “Twilight Time” from The Platters. I found the music a nice touch.

Wedding Bells

The trailer also begins with the new couple of Wanda Maximoff and Vision married. Yes, Vision is supposed to be dead since the events of Avengers: Infinity War. So, this makes the events of WandaVision more mind-boggling.

The trailer continues with the classic TV vibes. Then we get our first big eagle-eye easter egg in the wine bottle.

THE WINE BOTTLE

Wanda uses her powers to lift the wine bottle with her mind. When you look closely at the wine bottle you’ll notice it says “Maison du Mépris,” which in French means House of Contempt. This is a clear reference to Marvel comic House of M, in which the Scarlet Witch loses her mind. That’s the quick summary of the comic book arc, but it’s bonkers. WandaVision isn’t supposed to be directly adapting from that comic book but there is a possibility some of the moments from that comic book arc could come into play during the series.

They Don’t Remember

When asked a bunch of questions by their neighbors at dinner. Wanda and Vision realize they don’t remember when they got married and where they came from. The scene from the trailer is unique and gives away the plot point that everything is not what it seems, and it’s clear that Wanda might have gotten herself into an insane situation that only one of her fellow Avengers (Doctor Strange) may be able to fix.

Sitcoms Through the Ages

The next part of the trailer shows Wanda and Vision going through different sitcom eras. As YouTube channel New Rockstars pointed out, it does look like WandaVision will have sitcom eras inspired by Leave It to Beaver, Bewitched, Full House, and Roseanne which all aired on the Disney-owned ABC Network.

Synergy, kids.

Twins

It’s a quick shot but Wanda and Vision are holding their kids, William and Thomas. Better known as the mutants Wiccan and Speed from Marvel Comics.

Agatha Harkness

Probably one of the best dialogue exchanges happens at this point in the trailer. Vision lands in front of a single car. He approaches it and in the car is Kathryn Hahn (who is supposedly just playing a nosy neighbor character). Vision touches her and she gasps. She then asks him, “Am I dead?” In which Vision replies, “No…why would you think that?” She then says “Because you are.” She proceeds to do a witch-like cackle as Vision stares on.

Harkness is a witch in the Marvel Comics. She actually survives the Salem Witch Trials and in the comics, she becomes an adversary of the Scarlet Witch. The appearance of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision could mean that Mephisto is the main villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Even though there is a possibility that after the events of WandaVision, Scarlet Witch herself will play the villain in that film.

Classic Costumes

Even though we saw an earlier glimpse of Scarlet Witch in her original costume. The new trailer reveals Vision in his classic look. This will be one special Halloween episode.

Monica Rambeau getting tossed out of Wanda’s dimension?

Another big twist in the trailer is when Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, a grown-up version of the character from Captain Marvel, is sent through a dimension tunnel and arrives in present-day MCU. Basically confirming that Wanda created her own vision (pun intended) and that something big must go down in her new world.

A bunch of suits show up at the scene and it looks like there is another version of Monica Rambeau there. Right now it is expected these characters are a part of Nick Fury’s S.W.O.R.D., which is a bigger and better version of S.H.I.E.L.D that will guard the main MCU Earth and the galaxy from major threats.

Does S.W.O.R.D. tip-off Doctor Strange? Maybe, that’s how we get Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

The Ending

The ending of the trailer ends in black and white with Wanda saying that they are an unusual couple and Vision replies saying that never was in question. Marvel Studios hyped the trailer as “A Visionary New Age of Television.” Which could both be a play on Vision and a true statement that we are about to enter an era where Marvel Studios is producing film-quality television series for Disney+. The other thing that is certain is that “everything is not what it seems” in WandaVision.

WandaVision clearly has a double meaning of both Wanda and Vision coming together as it is their show and essentially the title being a play on television. WandaVision has massive potential to be one of the most creative and best projects that Marvel Studios has ever done. I can’t wait to see it.

WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, and tells the story of superheroes Wanda Maximoff and Vision living in an ideal suburban world but they begin to suspect not everything is what it seems. WandaVision is directed by Matt Shakman, Jac Schaeffer is the head writer for the series.

WandaVision is expected to premiere on Disney+ in December.
