After several days of rumors about Doctor Who star Millie Gibson leaving the show after only one season, Variety seems to be confirming it. Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, will soon be tied for second (with Thirteenth Doctor companion Dan Lewis) on the list of Doctor Who companions with the fewest episodes: nine compared to, First Doctor companion, Katarina’s eight.
(Yes, Who fans, we are not going to open the can of worms that includes Kamelion, Grace Holloway, and Mickey Smith, thankyouverymuch.)
Rumors are running rampant about what the inside story leading to Gibson’s short tenure might be, particularly as her premier episode, The Church on Ruby Road, was a ratings bonanza for the BBC. The Beeb and, normally chatty, showrunner Russell T. Davies are keeping mum.

Some bright news to come out of this is that Gibson’s replacement seems to have already been chosen in the form of Andor and Jurassic Park: Dominion’s Varada Sethu, which certainly gives fans something to look forward to after Ruby Sunday bids her farewell.
Cryptically commenting after the story broke Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, posted this on Instagram:
