🚨 Spoilers for the season finale of Ms. Marvel 🚨
In the final scene in the finale of Ms. Marvel, Bruno tells Kamala that there is something unique about her DNA. Bruno describes it as a “mutation” and the X-Men ‘97 theme starts to play. Which all but confirms that Kamala Khan is a mutant.
This is the first time a mutant has been recognized in Earth 616 in the MCU.
It may just be one line but it is a significant deal as the MCU is gearing to introduce mutants and eventually the X-Men. In the comics, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) is an Inhuman, but now she will be a mutant in the MCU.
It wasn’t just the fans that were excited. Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani was ecstatic at the major news.
“They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I immediately freaked out,” Vellani recalls to Marvel.com. “I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I was like, are you doing this like for real? Are you sure? I’m so honored! I was like yelling at him through an email. I was freaking out. This is the biggest deal in the world, and the fact that it’s happening in our show is crazy.”
Throughout the whole season of Ms. Marvel, viewers speculated on Kamala’s superpower origins. The show made the Clandestines, a group of supernatural beings, connected to Kamala but that move always felt like a red herring. A lot of viewers were expecting Kamala to be revealed as an Inhuman as she is in the comics. The twist of her being a mutant is so much better after a season of speculating her origin, and it opens up so many more questions for the future of the MCU.
“Here’s a really important thing that people do not know — when we were thinking about the character of Kamala back, back, back in the day in 2012, 2013, when [G.] Willow [Wilson, comic book writer] and myself were ideating, we originally wanted to make her a mutant. That was the whole intention, to be able to do that,” said Sana Amanat, a producer on Ms. Marvel to Empire.
So, there we have it. Kamala Khan was always destined to be a mutant and it finally happened in the MCU. The line is a huge deal and opens up a world of fantastic possibilities for the greater universe.
