‘West Side Story’ Star Rachel Zegler Will Play Snow White In Disney’s Live-Action Remake

The star of Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story' has been tapped to play Disney’s first princess in a new live-action adaption.

Rachel Zelger, the star of the upcoming West Side Story and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, will play Snow White in a live-action adaption of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It’s being reported that Zegler beat out many — including Olivia Rodrigo and Grammy winner H.E.R. — for the prized role. According to Deadline, Disney brass was blown away with footage of Zegler from the upcoming West Side Story, which ultimately led her to get the role.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man films) will direct the live-action adaption.

“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” Webb said in a statement.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been in development at Disney since 2016, with Marc Platt attached to produce. La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will write new music for the film.

The original Snow White was released in 1937 and marked the first Disney animated feature and Disney’s first princess. Maybe this film will arrive in 2023 to coincide with Disney celebrating 100 years as a company?

This continues Disney’s live-action remake strategy. On top of Snow White, we will see The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey, Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks, a Lilo & Stitch film from director Jon M. Chu, and Barry Jenkins The Lion King prequel.
