It has been a few weeks since the release of Incredibles 2. It has had some time to digest in my movie-watching stomach. After seeing it twice now the question became is it worthy of the hype and praise the media critics and public at large has been throwing at Brad Bird’s latest film? The answer might surprise you as I am a Disney super fan (including other subsidiaries like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm) so that should mean I am supercalifragilisticexpialidocious about everything Disney does.
With Incredibles 2 I left unfulfilled. Sure what I watched seemed satisfying : Great music, familiar characters , Edna Mode, How can you go wrong darling? Sadly Pixar gave me the original Incredibles all over again. Pixar is considered the best animation studio so why couldn’t we have an original Incredibles story. Why did the Supers need to go into hiding again? Instead of Mr. Incredible running off on assignment it was Mrs. Incredible. The children once again played the role of saving the parents. The villain plot twist was anything but that. Couldn’t they have given us a strong villain from the outset a good old fashion Disney /Pixar baddie. Instead the narrative of the villain in this story is something Disney/Pixar has used far to common as of late.
Now before people criticize for me being negative about this film it was enjoyable. Jack Jack and Edna Mode stole the show. I wish they have future cartoon shorts together reminiscent of the old Roger Rabbit Baby Herman shorts. They are going to be fabulous! Michael Giacchino once again provided an excellent score, the animation was beautiful and many, many lines were funny, and were great for audiences of all ages. I just want Pixar to challenge themselves to be better, and provide strong original stories whether through a sequel or a brand new intellectual property. Because I know how great Pixar can be. Just look at COCO and I know when given the time and energy Pixar can take us to worlds familiar and new, and still blow us away. Incredibles 2 sadly did not and with that I can only say it was slightly above average.
