Ubisoft to develop an open-world Star Wars video game

After revealing the revamped logo, Lucasfilm Games announced that Ubisoft is developing an open world Star Wars video game. EA, who developed a number of popular Star Wars games like Battlefront and Fallen Order, will no longer have exclusive rights to the franchise but will still play a part in this new era of Lucasfilm Games.

“EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward,” Sean Shoptaw, senior vice president of Global Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney said in an interview with WIRED. “But we did feel like there’s room for others.”

The onslaught of Star Wars gaming news started two days ago when Lucasfilm revealed its new identity and logo on January 11, along with the announcement of a new Indiana Jones game from Bethesda. Details on the project have not yet been revealed, but Bethesda teased a bit of the game with a trailer tweeted out from the company’s account.

Now with the Lucasfilm Games announcement, Star Wars fans can expect more games from the franchise in the upcoming future from both Ubisoft and EA.

The idea of an open-world Star Wars game has been requested by fans for ages and will be developed by Ubisoft’s studio Massive Entertainment in Sweden.

Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly told StarWars.com that Ubisoft said Star Wars has spent a year working with the two developers to start working on the much anticipated Star Wars project.

“I think we’re really excited about where that project is going because they have a unique vision for the story and the game they want to deliver,” he told StarWars.com.

Reilly also revealed in the interview that EA is also working on a number of projects as well, but wasn’t able to reveal many details in the interview.
