In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland discussed the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film takes place after the shocking ending of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Peter Parker’s identity is revealed to the world and problems ensue, and when Peter calls upon Doctor Strange things get worse in the multiverse.

During the interview with EW, Holland revealed that he treated No Way Home as a conclusion to his franchise.

“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland says. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”

Well, that’s a lot to unpack.

We all know Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts’ next project within the MCU is the Fantastic Four, and that will likely be its own trilogy. Holland seems to be open continuing on after the Homecoming trilogy. I could see two routes.

  1. Holland’s Spider-Man and the cast of characters appear in other MCU films before returning for a new trilogy with a new director that takes place during the college years set within the MCU.
  2. Holland’s Spider-Man and the cast of characters appear in a Sony trilogy for Sony’s Spider-Man universe, leaving the MCU behind entirely… hence No Way Home…

I’m biased but I prefer option one and I’m assuming most fans do. I think another Spider-Man trilogy is almost necessary in the MCU. I know Sony is going to want their piece too but if I’m Marvel Studios I would be fighting to keep Holland’s Spidey and that cast inside the MCU.

Holland in the interview even mentioned that his last day on set was emotional. Maybe the actors don’t know what the future holds. Maybe Marvel Studios and Sony are trying to figure out what’s next?

All I know is that Spider-Man: No Way Home looks to be an insane film. Arriving only in theaters on December 17.
