During the Walt Disney Studios presentation at CinemaCon, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige highlighted a 2025 release, Thunderbolts. Feige also announced that Thunderbolts would now be Thunderbolts*. There were rumors since Florence Pugh’s “we’re in production” set video that the name change with the asterisk could happen because of a set chair but others shrugged it off as they thought it was just the cast and crew having fun.

Feige even said on stage, “We won’t talk anymore about that (the asterisk) until after the movie comes out”

So what does this even mean? Well, it actually tells us quite a few things about this film.

Thunderbolts* is about CIA director Val sending a bunch of antiheroes on missions for the American government. Yes, it’s Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad. However, the inclusion of the asterisks means the Thunderbolts may not be the true Thunderbolts… It’s possible it’s a fake out because the team is the Dark Avengers or Secret Avengers. Could this end up being a lot deeper than we once thought?

It’s also possible that some members of the Thunderbolts may change their allegiance once they find out Val’s ulterior motives. So that could be another reason for the asterisk, maybe this team isn’t the true Thunderbolts. After all, will the MCU version of the Thunderbolts feel right without Baron Zemo?

It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out but there’s definitely something happening with Thunderbolts*.

Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Schreier, with a script from Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo.

The film stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Geraldine Viswanathan, Harrison Ford, and Lewis Pullman. The film is also rumored to feature the MCU returns of Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz.

Thunderbolts* comes out on May 5, 2025.
