Disney is once again reshuffling what goes to Hulu and what goes to Disney+. This time it seems to be a more positive note as Tony Hale’s new series The Mysterious Benedict Society is moving from Hulu to Disney+. The series is based on a bestselling book series and is developed by Trenton Lee.
The Mysterious Benedict Society joins The Right Stuff, High Fidelity, and Love, Victor as shows that have been swapped between the two Disney-owned streaming services. Love, Victor’s move from Disney+ to Hulu was met with fan backlash, although Love, Victor is now getting a season two at Hulu. The Right Stuff seems to be enjoying its success on Disney+ as it probably is getting more attention than it would on the National Geographic channel. High Fidelity with Zoe Kravitz was originally developed as a Disney+ series but ended up being too adult for the service. High Fidelity was axed after one season as a Hulu Original.
More about The Mysterious Benedict Society:
Placed undercover at a boarding school known as The Institute, a group of orphans must foil a nefarious plot with global ramifications while creating a new sort of family along the way. The original book, upon which the eight-episode first season is based, was named a Time magazine “Best Young Adult Book of all Time” and sold over 3 million copies.
“‘The Mysterious Benedict Society’ is a beautifully executed adaptation of the celebrated and beloved book series. It’s original, clever, and fun for the whole family, which makes it the perfect fit for Disney+,” said Dana Walden, chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television. “One of the great benefits to creators working with our company is that we have a platform that’s right for every series, and having seen the first few episodes of this show, there is no better home for it than Disney+.”
The show stars Tony Hale (Toy Story 4, Veep, Forky Asks A Question), Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, Last Man On Earth), Ryan Hurst, MaameYaa Boafo, Gia Sandhu, Seth Carr, Emmy DeOliveira, Mystic Inscho, and Marta Timofeeva.
The Mysterious Benedict Society is executive produced by Sonar Entertainment, 20th Television, Jamie Tarses, Karen Kehela Sherwood, writer-creator Matt Manfredi, and writer-creator Phil Hay (Ride Along). Showrunners for the series are Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin (Smallville).
The Mysterious Benedict Society will premiere on Disney+ in 2021.
