*🚨SPOILER ALERT FOR The Mandalorian season three🚨*
Today has brought the finale for season three of The Mandalorian.
The season three finale is an end to the long-running plot of retaking Mandalore from Moff Gideon. With a bumpy season to say the least, the finale tied all of the plots in a mostly satisfying way.
Bo-Katan and Din Djarin were able to team up with an army of Mandalorians against Moff Gideon’s Beskar-armored troopers. Luckily, Din escaped his capture and met up with Grogu for the final battle against Gideon. While remaining mostly predictable, a confusing moment came in the form of the Darksaber’s destruction at the hands of Moff Gideon. Then, Din and Grogu aided Bo in a 3v1 fight with Gideon, ending him once and for all.
The season finale closed out with Mando and Grogu getting their happy ending while Bo reunited all of The Mandalorians on Mandalore.
This begs the question, what happens next?
What’s next is the new Ahsoka series and the “Mandoverse” event film. At this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced a Star Wars film set in the New Republic, which will be directed by Dave Filoni. Episode 7 of The Mandalorian mentioned Thrawn once again, which only points towards a huge climax of these storylines in the film.
It’s been a long four years since the series premiered in late 2019, with many spin-off projects and seasons released since then. The Mandalorian is now more akin to Iron Man, a standalone project gaining widespread acclaim and creating a whole universe as a result.
Interestingly enough, the announced Rangers of the New Republic got retooled as a result of the Gina Carano controversy. The premise seemed to have fit its way into this current season, with the New Republic’s uncaring nature leading way for the First Order.
The first spin-off was The Book of Boba Fett, set up after The Mandalorian season two and taking place before the third season. It essentially acted as a pseudo-season 2.5, with multiple episodes featuring Mando with barely any Boba Fett. Ahsoka herself cameoed alongside Luke Skywalker, leading the way for her solo project.
The Book of Boba Fett immediately tied up the loose-plot thread of Grogu and Mando’s separation, having them meet again in the season finale. This made the incoming season of The Mandalorian seem directionless at first due to its major cliffhangers being resolved.
Finally, though, the Ahsoka series got an official trailer at this year’s Star Wars Celebration. Revealing more Rebels characters in live-action like Sabine, Ezra, and Hera. Zeb also cameoed in a recent Mandalorian episode, most likely to tease the rest of the Ghost crew. Lucky attendees even got to see Thrawn in all his glory, confirming the casting of Lars Mikkelsen.
So fans don’t have to wait long until more entries of the Mandoverse get released onto Disney+. This year still has Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew which was created by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts.
Disney has yet to officially order more seasons of The Book of Boba Fett, but clear cliffhangers left in the finale point to more stories to tell with Boba and Fennec. The Mandalorian season four is prepping pre-production and filming for a possible 2025 release.
All of this will eventually culminate in Dave Filoni’s own Star Wars film, which may in well be an adaption of Heir to the Empire from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The many plot threads and subtle hints throughout these shows point to this. From Moff Gideon’s cloning plans, Captain Pellaeon, dark Jedi, and Thrawn’s return itself.
Although, the film likely won’t release until 2026 at the earliest due to Rey’s 2025 movie being prioritized. While The Mandalorian season three wasn’t as eventful or groundbreaking as previous seasons, the future of this era of Star Wars shows much promise and potential.
