Taika Waititi, director of Oscar-nominated film JoJo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok has been approached to lead a new Star Wars film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s unsure how things are moving in the talks.
Waititi tweeted Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album cover when news of the talks were first published on January 16.

Is this just a rumor? Or will we be seeing Taika in a galaxy far, far away?
This won’t be his first go-around in the Star Wars universe. Most recently, he voiced IG-11, bounty-hunter-turned-nanny droid in the Disney+ original, The Mandalorian. He also directed the season’s final episode, which received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

For now, Waititi is finishing up Next Goal Wins for Searchlight Pictures (formerly Fox Searchlight) and then moving on to write and direct the fourth Thor installment, Thor: Love and Thunder. If something does come from these talks, it wouldn’t come to fruition until at least 2022.
For now, the Star Wars universe looks to John Favreau as he develops the second season of The Mandalorian and Deborah Chow as she directs the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+.
When it comes to movies, nothing is currently in the works. Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed The Last Jedi, had a trilogy in the works but is now focusing on a sequel to his film, Knives Out. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss also had a trilogy in the works but exited the plans late last year.
What do you think of this? Would Waititi be a good fit for the Star Wars universe? Comment or tweet us @BoardwalkTimes on Twitter.
