In an interview on StarWars.com on May the 4th, Imagineer Ann Morrow Johnson revealed some intriguing details about the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.
During your two-day, two-night vacation guests will board the Halcyon. Guests will also get the opportunity to wield a lightsaber. One of the biggest selling points of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is that guests can now live out their own Star Wars stories. Johnson reveals some of the story that guests may be involved in on the Galactic Starcruiser (a lot of it seems like it was going to be used for Galaxy’s Edge before being move to the Galactic Starcruiser experience).
StarWars.com also specifically states that “guests can align with the Resistance (the story is set between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, same as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge) or betray them. As for how that impacts one’s vacation, we’ll have to wait to find out.”
So, this story element may restrict some of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience as it will be taking place in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. I can’t wait to see how Disney uses the Galactic Starcruiser to fill in the gaps between those films just like it used Star Tours and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
Ann Morrow Johnson also revealed the entire design will make you feel like you we’re on board of a ship.
“When you look out the window, you will see a galaxy far, far away. When you’re at the front of the ship, you’ll see us moving forward. If you’re on the starboard side, you’ll see it moving to the side. On the port side, same deal. And just like any other cruise, we have an itinerary. So we have a set list of planets that we will visit. It’s possible that we might take a detour or two if we find ourselves in unexpected circumstances. But you will be able to see those planets, other ships, maybe the occasional asteroid field, out the window as we cruise from place to place. On board we have a whole host of characters who are joining us on our adventure, and that’s everything from the crew of the ship to a few folks that you might recognize from the movies, and they’ll need our help over the course of our adventure.” Who might those movie characters be? “I can tell you that it’s possible we might run into Rey, Chewbacca, and if we play our cards wrong, Kylo Ren.”
I think there is a key part within this quote that some have overlooked. “And just like any other cruise, we have an itinerary. So we have a set list of planets that we will visit. It’s possible that we might take a detour or two if we find ourselves in unexpected circumstances,” said Imagineer Ann Morrow Johnson. I think the quote is in regards to the story. Maybe the Galactic Starcruiser will run into The First Order and Kylo Ren. Maybe the quote also means like legit cruises that Disney has a backup plan if one of the functions of the ship isn’t working or if certain “destinations” can’t happen. It would be interesting to see what they do.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will also encourage cosplay. In the past, cosplay has been restricted in ways at Disney Parks.
I’m super excited for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser as it seems like Walt Disney Imagineering is really upping its game when it comes to an immersive two-day, two-night experience. I think it will be exciting to see the experience finally open in 2022 after years of hype and speculation.
