Spider-Man is Back: Disney and Sony Make-Up, ‘Spider-Man 3’ Set for 2021

Both sides truly wanted to get back together.

Well, what a day. The saga of Disney/Sony fighting over Spider-Man has ended. The two companies have reached a deal to have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man continue to appear in the MCU. Although right now all the details from the deal are that it’s only for two films it is likely we will see more films for both the Spider-Man franchise and Spider-Man in other MCU films.

Marvel and Disney will now receive 25% of the profits. Disney will also put up a quarter of the financing for future films. Disney will retain its merchandising rights. With the announcement of the new arrangement. Spider-Man 3 within the MCU will be released on July 16, 2021. The arrangement also includes another Spider-Man appearance within another MCU film (meaning Tom Holland could show up in Avengers 5, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, etc. basically whatever Marvel decides on). I’m sure the contract will be extended again due to the equal benefit Sony and Disney get from it.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will be producing the third Spider-Man. entry in the MCU. Here is what he had to say about the news:

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Amy Pascal will also produce through Pascal Pictures. She produced the first two Holland-led films.

“Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”- Amy Pascal

Marvel licensed Spider-Man to Sony long before Disney bought the company. In 2017, Spider-Man joined the MCU, the main Marvel film universe. The initial Disney-Sony deal was up after Spider-Man: Far From Home. Which lead us to the Spidey Scuffle of 2019.

Just hours after the announcement of the co-financing deal between Disney and Sony. Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts looks to be closing in on a deal to return as director for the third installment. This will be good for continuity considering how Far From Home ended.

The rest of the Spider-Man main cast is expected to return which includes Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, and J.K. Simmons (I would assume).

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man returns in Spider-Man 3 on July 16, 2021.
