Predicting The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ Mixtape

ELO, David Bowie, Hall & Oates maybe?

Let’s just start off this article by saying. We have no clue what songs James Gunn is going to pick for this film. We do not have any insider information when it comes to the Guardians mixtape. So, none of the below is spoilers. It’s all part of a fun guessing game.

Also with Zune, Quill now has the abilities to listen to new music past the seventies/eighties. I still think he will lean towards older music but maybe after Endgame, he was set up with new music from some of his newly found friends on Earth.

Hall & Oates- She’s Gone

“She’s Gone” by Hall & Oates is a perfect tune to kickoff Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and its mixtape. After the events of Infinity War and Endgame, the Gamora that Peter Quill loved is gone. So, yeah is it a bit cheesy for him to listen to a song from Hall & Oates about her being gone but still, it’s a fantastic song. Also, this song was cut from the Awesome Mix Vol.2 so it is possible it could land on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 mixtape.

Todd Rundgren- Hello It’s Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsezr0qiFIc

One of Rundgren’s best-known songs. The song was in consideration for Vol.2’s soundtrack so it is possible it could return for Vol.3’s soundtrack. Remember both The Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” and Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” were considered for original’s soundtrack but found a place on Vol.2.

The song fits the Guardian’s seventies feel.

Electric Light Orchestra- Telephone Line

Electric Light Orchestra has been closely associated with the Guardians of the Galaxy. ELO’s “Livin’ Thing” was used in a scene that got cut from the original film. “Livin’ Thing” was also supposed to be used in the opening sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. Gunn and Marvel wanted “Mr. Blue Sky” instead and acquiring the rights to use “Mr. Blue Sky” from ELO was difficult for Marvel due to their song being cut in the first film.

“Telephone Line” is different from “Mr. Blue Sky” and “Livin’ Thing.” It also fits the Guardians soundtrack. It’s one of my personal favorite ELO songs. I’m really trying to hint at Star-Lord being emotional about where Gamora is with the current music I’m predicting. Also, this is my favorite section of the song.

Blue days, black nights, doo wah doo lang
I look into the sky (the love you need ain’t gonna see you through)
And I wonder why (the little things you planned ain’t comin’ true)
Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time, I’m living in twilight
Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time, I’m living in twilight

Bob Welch — Sentimental Lady

Bob Welch was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974. In 1972, Welch wrote, “Sentimental Lady” based off his first wife. Fleetwood Mac originally sang the song, and then in 1977 when Welch went solo he recorded it for himself although he had the help of Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham.

Add this song to the “Missing Gamora” section of the soundtrack.

T. Rex — Planet Queen

T. Rex is a 1970’s glam rock band. This song has a very cosmic feel and would easily fit in with the Guardians musical taste. Yeah, some of these songs may be a little on the nose but I guess that’s what happens when you are in the middle of a guessing game.

David Bowie- Modern Love

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn loves David Bowie. With this being the last hurrah for his Guardians I figured he would include a Bowie track. “Modern Love” may be a little too popular and well-known for the Guardians but still. It’s an incredible song.

Maybe they even use it as one of the ending songs similar to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terell from the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Kenny Loggins- Footloose

Boardwalk Illustration

“Is it still the greatest movie of all time?”- Peter Quill (Star-Lord)

“It never was.”- Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

One of the best exchanges from Infinity War. Wouldn’t it be nice to see Peter Quill jam out to some Footloose in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3? Also, it could shed light on if the Guardians hung around Earth before they got back into the galaxy. Obviously, the group was present during Tony Stark’s funeral and it must have been a weird time for Star-Lord as it was the first time he was back on his home planet.

America- Sister Golden Hair

After watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. We know Ayesha will be the villain for the third installment. She and her people are made out of gold. So, America’s “Sister Golden Hair” works pretty perfectly within the tracklist. America has a lot of incredible songs and it was honestly a struggle to pick which one would most likely pop up in a Guardians film.

Little River Band — Cool Change

Another seventies song. Also, maybe this is a little on the nose but maybe the Guardians will go through a cool change? Get it?

The Australian rock band’s song “Cool Change” peaked in America’s Top 10. The song was released in 1979. Just another great tune. It fits the style and could potentially have more of a meaning.

Fleetwood Mac- Go Your Own Way

Hey, why not add more Fleetwood Mac? There isn’t a rule that Gunn can’t have a band appear twice. I already did that for ELO and David Bowie. So, let’s get some Fleetwood Mac up in here. “Go Your Own Way” could be great for a fight scene or for a really dramatic moment during the film.

Harvest- Dancing in the Moonlight

The song was used in the Guardians of the Galaxy: Telltale Series. Which that game features a lot of good Guardians-like songs. The Guardians also like to dance. Star-Lord, Groot, and even Gamora dance throughout the series so maybe this song could potentially tap into that. King Harvest is best known for their song “Dancing in the Moonlight” and has had many members over the years.

Manfred Mann — Blinded by the Light

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s whimsical “Blinded by the Light” would be a thrilling listen during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. The song was written by Bruce Springsteen. People really love trying to figure out what the song is even trying to say.

“The funny thing is that afterwards people came up to me and said: ‘You know why that record was such a hit, don’t you? Because everyone was trying to figure out if it was ‘deuce’ or ‘douche’,” said Manfred Mann.

Alice Cooper — Teenage Lament ‘74

This song was originally discussed to make the Awesome Mix Vol.2. Alice Cooper didn’t make the cut. Yet what about for Awesome Mix Vol.3? Could the Alice Cooper song “Teenage Lament ‘74” pull a Cheap Trick “Surrender”? Well, it certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility. It would also counterbalance the more glam/folk rock that I have been picking.

The Sweet — Ballroom Blitz

The Sweet is another recurring band that I have on this list. It may be unlikely but the glam band’s “Ballroom Blitz” has the perfect energy for most action-adventure films.

The Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” song appeared in the Awesome Mix Vol.2 and was prominently featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 trailers.

Bonuses

I compiled three bonus song predictions. I just want to take a moment to say how thankful I am that Disney brought back James Gunn so the film trilogy and his music trilogy can end correctly.

Bonus: Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar

The Guardians ship is called the Benatar. A clever play on words perhaps? The song was released in 1979 so once again it fits in the seventies vibe. The Benatar was actually named after Pat Benatar. “Heartbreaker” could fit many areas of the film.

Also, Pat Benatar’s song “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” appears in the Disney California Adventure attraction Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!

Bonus: Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp

This one was really difficult to leave off the list. The band Supertramp is right up the Guardians alley. The English rock band had many tunes I could’ve picked for the next Guardians soundtrack. Supertramp’s “ Goodbye Stranger” could also be a nice ending song. I just couldn’t find a spot for it in my original predictions.

Bonus: Dust in the Wind by Kansas

GET IT BECAUSE EVERYONE TURNED TO DUST IN INFINITY WAR?

We could say they were Dust in the Wind.

(The song is also fantastic and that matters too).

Bonus: Listen to the Music by The Doobie Brothers

In my A Deeper Dive Into The Music of Guardians of the Galaxy, I suggested that this song should be included in the third and presumably final film of the franchise. Here is what I said:

My only song suggestion would be “Listen to the Music” by The Doobie Brothers. They fit the Peter Quill musical timeline. Also, the song is perfect because an integral part of the Guardians franchise has been listening to the music.

I’ve also seen a lot within the Marvel fan community suggest that the Awesome Mix Vol.3 with the Zune should feature songs from Queen, Bee Gees, Elton John, Backstreet Boys, The Temptations, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Billy Joel. I’d be fine with anything from those performers but for this current prediction list, it is hard to figure out if those type of musicians and songs would truly make it.

I’m excited about the new soundtrack and I’m hoping a couple of these songs make the cut!
