Thor: Love and Thunder premiered on Thursday, and with that fresh in our minds. The staff of Boardwalk Times decided it would be fun to tackle this question about Taika Waititi and one of his upcoming projects.
What will Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film be about?
Zach Perilstein (Editor-in-Chief): I think it’s going to be a smaller scale Star Wars film. I have a feeling it’s going to be radically different and maybe the first true Star Wars comedy film. I don’t even know if the film will have what we’ve come to know and love about Star Wars like the Jedi/Sith, Lightsabers, and all that jazz. This may be a smaller story and feature new and unique characters. My hot take prediction that will likely end up being wrong is that the film will take place over one night and potentially be a heist film. Just a random gut feeling. Maybe with potential titles like Star Wars: The Heist on Hoth or Star Wars: One Crazy Night in Cloud City.
Muska Olumi (Columnist): I think I heard that Taika is planning on making the movie not related to the Skywalker Saga and honestly I would love that because at this point in time I think I want to see things more outside of the universe like The Mandalorian. I’m hoping the movie will be about just a guy or gal figuring out how to live in a world plagued with war. There’s so much to explore there to be honest.
Giovanni Delgadillo (Columnist): Judging by his other films, my guess is that it will be set in any given time period but be completely about a not-so-good group of smugglers, bounty hunters, or Jedi. It will most likely feature wackier aliens and planets than we are used to and be about this group growing from their experience as either a family or individuals.
Elizabeth Pfeiffer (Senior Editor): Anything we think we can expect from Taika Waititi — don’t, because he’ll do something completely different. He’s not only really creative when it comes to comedy (as we’ve seen in his various films like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit), but his films also have a deep level of emotional maturity to them (this is your official sign to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople!!). His ability to create campy, fun action films with dynamic depth really means he could do anything. I’m expecting the unexpected from him. Sure, I could say it’s going to be a colorful space explosion full of campy characters blundered into hilarious shenanigans, but I know it’ll be much more than that. I want to see something out of this world (space pun intended) because I know that anything’s possible — like Star Wars tweeted when combating racist fans, “There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy…”
Sara Edwards (Star Wars Writer): I feel like Taika is going to go the Bounty Hunter route. I think he’s going to create a band of Bounty Hunters that are trying to make it big in the Outer Rim but it’s a very comedic, satirical journey. Then this band of hunters gets tasked with a huge job that may or may not make them a name and they keep messing up.
