Pixar Reveals Its Next Original Film ‘Luca’

‘Luca’ will open in theaters in the summer of 2021.

Pixar announced that it’s next original film will be Luca, a coming-of-age story about a young boy and his sea monster friend. The film will take place in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera.

The film will be directed by Enrico Casarosa, writer and director of Pixar short La Luna. The film will be produced by Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3). Luca will arrive in theaters on June 18, 2021.

“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca,” said Casarosa.

Casarosa’s La Luna was also set in Italy and that short played before Brave. Pixar uses its shorts program and now it’s SparkShorts program to eye the talent of the future. Like Enrico Casarosa getting his own featured film. Domee Shi, writer, and director of Bao is another example. Shi is currently developing a feature project for Pixar.

Luca looks to be an epic Pixar summer adventure film that will arrive in theaters on June 18, 2021. Pixar’s next film is Soul which will come out in November after being delayed from June. Earlier this year Pixar released another original film Onward which made $100 million globally before transitioning to Disney+ early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
