Lightyear starring Chris Evans as the character who inspired the iconic space ranger from the Toy Story universe. Lightyear is Pixar’s most meta film yet. Lightyear is going to be the actual film that inspired Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story universe.
It may be the most creative way of doing a spinoff in a long time. Pixar is touting this film as a sci-fi adventure that will provide the definitive origin story for Buzz Lightyear.
Lightyear is directed by Angus MacLane, whose credits include co-directing Finding Dory and directing Toy Story of Terror. MacLane has been a member of Pixar’s senior creative team since Coco.
“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” Lightyear star Chris Evans said. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”
Lightyear is inspired by the sci-fi classics of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Which is a cool choice for a Pixar film, and also makes sense given that Toy Story’s timeline starts in the 90s.
Joining Buzz Lightyear will be characters Alicia Hawthorne, Sox, Qurinside, and Emperor Zurg. Although we don’t know who will be voicing these characters.

Also, any time you can use a David Bowie song it seems like the film is primed for success.
Lightyear hits theaters on June 17, 2022.
