Marvel Studios Announces ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, Robert Downey Jr. Returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom

The hero of the Infinity Saga will return to play the villain of the Multiverse Saga.

Tonight, Marvel Studios made numerous announcements during its Hall H presentation but one announcement stands above them all.

Robert Downey Jr., who was the cornerstone of the MCU’s Infinity Saga as Tony Stark/Iron Man, will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. Avengers 5 has gone from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers 5 to Avengers: Doomsday.

Downey will play the villainous role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Downey said it was a “new mask, same task” when it came to his new role within the MCU.

The Russo Brothers will direct the next two Avengers films as well. Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote Infinity War and Endgame with Christopher Markus, will write the new Avengers movies.

Avengers: Doomsday will premiere in May 2026.
