Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars films are no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.
After the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, with The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm has been stuck with how to move forward with Star Wars. Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which was announced in 2020, was supposed to premiere in December 2023 before it was delayed. Now Rogue Squadron is out of active development and is on the back burner.
Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film which was announced to be in development in 2019 is also no longer in active development. Feige even hired Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron to write his Star Wars film. Waldron was enjoying the writing process for Feige’s Star Wars film. Waldron since the Star Wars film announcement has been tapped to write Avengers: Secret Wars, which will of course be produced by Kevin Feige.
It does make sense that Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film is no longer in active development. Feige runs Marvel Studios and all his focus should be on that until he has other execs that are able to pick up his workload. Marvel Studios has a lot on its plate, the last thing they need and Disney needs is Feige’s attention being diverted toward a likely one-off Star Wars film.
Despite these films no longer being in active development, Deadline reports that both Feige’s untitled Star Wars film and Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron aren’t dead at Lucasfilm. So, there is still some hope that these projects may come to the big screen in the future.
The earliest date a Star Wars film could premiere would be December 2025. Both Variety and Deadline have reported that the 2025 slot will likely go to Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film. Taika Waititi may even star in the Star Wars film that he’s writing and directing. Another possible Star Wars film that could take the 2025 slot is the one that’s being worked on by Damon Lindelof and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
A lot of people have also been wondering what has happened to Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy. Johnson is busy with more Knives Out and Poker Face. Deadline states that the project isn’t in active development but it isn’t dead either. But let’s face it all signs are pointing to this trilogy getting scrapped by Lucasfilm. However, maybe Rian Johnson ends up doing a Star Wars Disney+ series. That could end up being a win-win for both Johnson and Lucasfilm.
The future of Star Wars will likely be revealed on April 7 at Star Wars Celebration in London. Other news we can expect from Star Wars Celebration includes The Mandalorian’s future, Andor season two, The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka.
