I’m Looking Forward to James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ But Not For The Reason You Think

The Avatar franchise pulls on my heartstrings.

Over D23 weekend, Disney Legend James Cameron flew all the way from New Zealand to discuss the third installment in the Avatar franchise.

Cameron announced that the third film will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. The third film will see Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family on another adventure and we will see another side of Pandora that will have an aggressive sky-based, fire faction.

“The new film is definitely not what you expect,” said Cameron. “But it’s definitely what you want.”

Cameron is directing the film and it will star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, and Bailey Bass.

I’m looking forward to this film but not for the reason you may think.

My late Grandpa absolutely adored the first film.

I’d argue that he liked Avatar before it was in style to like it. I think he was fascinated by the world of Pandora and how a paralyzed Jake Sully became a healed Na’Vi warrior. My Grandpa also enjoyed the second film, The Way of Water, but I guess he wasn’t a fan of the human character Spider (“Spider? He’s a little runt.” — GP). I always hoped to take him to Pandora: World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom but various health issues and setbacks didn’t allow that to happen.

When James Cameron spoke at the Honda Center on Friday and Sunday night. I couldn’t stop thinking about my Grandpa. It was the only thing on my mind. When I walked through the Avatar exhibit on the show floor. I just remembered him and how he would’ve thought what I was doing right now was so cool. It’s crazy what stories have the power to do and how they can bring back memories you shared with your loved ones.

I also suspect I won’t have dry eyes while watching Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025.

Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters on December 19, 2025.
