For the first time since 2021 a new season of television’s longest-running science fiction series, Doctor Who, is about to hit our screens on May 10 with streaming releases on Disney+ and the BBC iPlayer and a terrestrial viewing the following day in the U.K. on BBC1.

In the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Russell T. Davies seems to be relishing his return to the series with teases about upcoming episodes and suggestions on how, as a fan, he avoids spoilers.

The show will have had three different Seasons One after the May 10th launch — originally in 1963, when Davies brought the show back in 2005, and now this one — and RTD wants to be very clear about the reasoning behind the renumbering of the seasons of the sixty-year-old show:

… this season is new, the Doctor and Ruby are new, and the monsters and stories and villains are new, new, new.

You can start here, first-time viewer. Don’t worry about all those years of backstory. Truth is, there isn’t one. He’s a man in a time machine and she’s his best mate, that’s all there is to it. If you have questions, don’t worry, Ruby asks them! And the show works like an anthology series — every week, a new time and place. Deep in history, or the future on far-flung alien worlds, or thrillers in the modern day, we’ve got them all. Lots of free-standing episodes, although, pay attention, because there are little hints and hooks here and there which might build up to something in the season finale.

And you, old faithfuls. Create new viewers! Have that screening party and invite someone new. If someone says “I don’t know where to start,” tell them: right here, right now! — RTD

Space Babies, The Fab Four (who first appeared on Doctor Who in 1965), More Mel, More UNIT, The Maestro, the return of Mrs. Flood and, I have to imagine, a few Daleks peppered here and there suggest that the future is looking bright for our favorite Time Lord!

A trailer for the new season is available right here,

Doctor Who Season One premieres on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer on May 10 with two episodes: Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord.
