Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies has announced the schedule for Doctor Who through the end of 2024. After the three 60th Anniversary episodes next November, there will be a Christmas special — presumably the point at which Ncuti Gatwa takes the helm as The Fifteenth Doctor — and then a season of eight new episodes which will conclude the year with a 2024 Christmas special.
Due to the pandemic, Doctor Who production has been sporadic for the last several years, but it is curious that with the reported significant increase in the show’s budget due to its distribution arrangement with Disney+ that the length of the season — about thirteen episodes when Davies was previously showrunner — is being abbreviated to eight.
Davies had this to say:
It takes a while to get the empire in shape, but that’s a serious plan: annual Doctor Who, no gap years, lots of content, on and on.
This likely re-enforces statements he’s made prior suggesting a renewed push for more of a “Who-niverse” style of enterprise with multiple spin-offs (Davies was previously involved with both the Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures spin-offs.) and franchise connections in other media.
