According to an article from the Orlando Business Journal, Disney is in talks to move some of its office divisions from its Burbank, California headquarters to Lake Nona, Florida near Walt Disney World.
Nothing has been signed and it is currently unclear what divisions and how many cast members would have to relocate from California to Florida. Disney moving some of its divisions to Florida would solidify its relationship with the state and also show that their current relationship with the state of California isn’t wonderful. Disney would also be a part of a trend of many big-time companies that are moving from California to more business-minded and tax-friendly states.
California is the home to the majority of Disney’s divisions which includes its corporate headquarters, film, theme parks, and other related operations. A Disney spokesperson told Orlando Business Journal:
“As the largest employer in Central Florida, we are always exploring opportunities for additional locations within the vicinity of our theme park, but there is nothing concrete,”
If Disney goes through with a move like this they would be joining companies like Hewlett Packard and Oracle who both moved from California to Texas. It’s also expected that Elon Musk’s Tesla will move to another state. Could Musk join Disney with a corporate move to the sunshine state?
Obviously, Disney’s move wouldn’t be a large-scale move but it would still be a major shakeup to California and a big win for the economy of Florida. That Lake Nona area is a compelling situation considering it’s 19 minutes from Walt Disney World.
This move could be a mix of Disney being frustrated with California’s government but also realizing that the center of their theme park universe is in Florida. Having more divisions being located in Florida could help Walt Disney World and The Walt Disney Company overall.
