Disney is deciding to make the best of it this holiday season as they release Soul on Disney+ for no extra charge. Disney is dropping the Premier Access business model for now after experimenting with it for Mulan. Soul will be a special Christmas present for Disney+ subscribers. It also marks the first time that a Pixar film won’t premiere in theaters. Obviously, I expected that one day we would see original Pixar films premiere on Disney+ but I didn’t expect that until like year five into Disney+, this change is occurring during Disney+’s first year. Obviously, this change was accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Soul was originally going to be released in June before this disaster of a year happened. Soul was then moved to November with the hopes by then that we would at least be back to a somewhat normal. Sadly, we were wrong again. Now, here we are as Soul will drop on Disney+ on Christmas Day.
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.” — Disney CEO Bob Chapek
“The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place — but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things. ‘Soul’ investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.” — Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter
Soul is directed by Pete Docter (Up and Inside Out) and Kemp Powers. The film was written by Docter, Powers, and Mike Jones. Soul features the voice talent of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Angela Bassett, and Daveed Diggs. The score is composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
Soul arrives on Disney+ on Christmas Day.
