Today, Disney’s Media & Entertainment Distribution division announced that Black Widow would move from its May 7 release date to July 9. The twist is that Black Widow will premiere in theaters and on Disney+.

“Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences. By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution in a statement.

Along with Black Widow, Cruella will also premiere in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on May 28. Disney-Pixar’s Luca will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in a similar move to Disney-Pixar’s Soul. Luca will be a special offering that will kick off the summer season for Disney. In international markets, where Disney+ isn’t available yet. Luca will be in theaters for those markets.

Disney is also reshuffling its summer slate around some of these moves. Including new dates of films:

  • Free Guy on August 13, 2021
  • Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3, 2021
  • The King’s Man on December 22, 2021
  • Deep Water on January 14, 2022
  • Death on the Nile on February 11, 2022

Disney+ Premier Access is a premium feature on Disney+ which allows subscribers to pay $30 for films to watch straight from their homes. Disney+ Premier Access started off with Mulan to mixed results. Now with Raya and the Last Dragon being a success on Disney+ Premier Access that factored into the decision to make Black Widow and Cruella premiere in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access simultaneously.
